NAACP FLORIDA STATE CONFERENCE CALLS ATTENTION TO VOTES UNDER ATTACK IN SOUTH FLORIDA AND DEMANDS EVERY VOTE IS COUNTED
~A thorough investigation is needed as these allegations impact several statewide races in the State of Florida. ~

FORT LAUDERDALE — The NAACP Florida State Conference is disturbed by reports of 2018 General Election absentee ballots at the Opa Locka Mail Distribution Facility and other local post offices, not delivered to Supervisor of Elections or local recipients.

Adora Obi Nweze, President of the NAACP Florida State Conference and a member of the National NAACP Board of Directors, issued the following statement:
“The right to vote is one of the most valuable and sacred constitutional rights granted to Americans. The NAACP knows very well the value of voting, as we have been on the front lines of voting rights for all. In 1951, Harry T. Moore, past Florida State Conference President and his wife, Harriette V. Moore fought for voting rights and were bombed in their bedroom on Christmas Day in Mims, with unopened gifts under the tree, leaving their children without parents due to their strong belief in exercising the right to vote in Florida. Nationally, we stood with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee advocating for federal action protecting the voting rights of racial minorities.

As we approach the 2018 Christmas holidays, nearly 70 years later after the death of the Moore Family, it’s shameful we are still fighting for the right to cast a vote, fair elections and ensuring all ballots are counted in our elections. We call upon law enforcement, the media and civil rights organizations to join the NAACP, as we demand a prompt and thorough outside investigation of these serious allegations of uncounted votes going through the Opa Locka Mail Distribution Facility. The U.S. Postal Service took an initial step for an internal investigation, but due to the magnitude, it requires an outside investigation to ensure any credibility. If a decision was made by someone to prevent political mail and ballots from reaching local Supervisor of Elections or local voters, this is a federal offense and it strongly undermines our election process. The NAACP strongly believes in speaking through the ballot box and we will continue to speak out forcefully when our votes are under attack. Join the NAACP as we ensure EVERY VOTE is counted!”
